Shunshanji Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Named by the Regional Geological Survey Party of Anhui Province in 1975 and formally cited by Zhai Renjie et al. in 1976. After a study of the Xiaying and Paozizui section ~2 km northeast of Shunshanji, Lai’an, the Department of Geology, Nanjing University, divided the original Shunshanji Formation into the late Paleocene Paozizui Fm and early Eocene Shunshanji Fm (Kang Yuyi et al., 1982). As the two formations bear certain similarities with respect to lithology and biotas, this division has not been accepted. The present Shunshanji Formation is still based on the definition given by the Anhui Regional Geological Survey Party. It refers to brackish lacustrine deposits beneath the Zhangshanji Fm.
Lithology and Thickness
Lower part consists of brownish red or light brown sandy conglomerate, pebbly sandstone, sandy mudstone and muddy sandstone and grayish green mudstone, with marlstone and gypsum. Upper part is brownish red, brown, light yellow and yellowish green sandy mudstone and mudstone with marlstone. The exposure thickness is ~120–145 m.
